MaxMind GeoLiteDB Plugin

The MaxMind geolite db plugin provides a way to add information about the geographical location of IP addresses, based on data from the MaxMind GeoLite2 databases. It is bundled with the city database out of the box, but can be used with other commercial databases available from MaxMind.

GeoLite2 databases are free IP geolocation databases that are comparable to, but less accurate than, MaxMind’s GeoIP databases. They are updated twice weekly, on Tuesday and Friday. They are also available as a web service in the GeoLite2 Country and GeoLite2 City web services, which allow up to 1000 IP address lookups per service per day.

MaxMind GeoLite DB: Enhancing Geolocation Accuracy

Each database contains a search tree and a data section. The search tree includes the full name of the country and the populated names of the subdivisions, plus the city, postal code and additional intelligence such as confidence factors (as reported by city, enterprise and insight end points). The data section contains an IPv4 address from the 2002::/16 subnet, which is the 6to4 mapping subnet. If an address is not found in the data section, a ValueError will be raised.

You are responsible for protecting the security of the GeoLite Databases and GeoLite Data, including against unauthorized or unlawful processing or against accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration or damage. You will promptly notify MaxMind if you discover any such incident and take all steps reasonably necessary to mitigate the impact of the incident. You will not disclose the GeoLite Databases or GeoLite Data to any third party unless expressly permitted by this Agreement and subject to the limitations outlined in LIMITED GRANT OF RIGHTS, ADDITIONAL RESTRICTIONS and PERSONAL DATA.
